Torrington’s Mikayla Butler hits a single, moving the winning run to third base on Saturday against the Colorado Menace.
ARVADA, Colo. – The Torrington Twisters softball team traveled to Arvada to participate in the Firecracker Tournament.
The first game of pool play saw the Twisters face the Colorado Titans.
Raele Riley hit a two-out bases-loaded triple in the first inning en route to a 16-2 victory.
In the second game, the Twisters pounded out 10 runs over three innings to win 10-0 over the Colorado Roadrunners.
Next for the Twisters was the Colorado Menace.
“The Menace are one of the elite teams in Colorado,” coach Dan Fox said. “I like playing games like this. It really shows what kind of team we are.”
Jenifer Barge was on the mound for the Twisters.
The Menace would load up the bases with no out.
Catcher Marisa Santos picked off the runner on first. A fielder’s choice would get out number two but would score the runner on first giving the Menace an early 1-0 lead.
The Twisters tied the game up on an overthrown ball on an attempted pickoff.
“Barge was pitching a great game, and the Twisters were playing great defense behind her,” Fox said.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth.
Izzy Thompson opened the inning with a bunt single and Mikayla Butler moved Thompson to third with a single to center field. Barb Calvert drove home the winning run by Thompson on an RBI single to right field.
The win placed the Twisters as the No. 1 seed in Sunday’s eliminations.
In the semifinal round, the Twisters faced the Colorado Diamonds.
Cassandra Bustillous and Mikka Salazar led the Twisters 11-run attack. For the complete article see the 06-27-2012 issue.
