Dr. Wilbert G. Walter

Funeral services for Dr. Wilbert G. Walter, Ph.D., 76, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Lingle Community Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Curtis Hill officiating. Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery. Dr. Walter died Feb. 3 in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant. The casket will be open prior to the service at the church. Local arrangements are under the direction of the Colyer Funeral Home.

Dr. Walter was born Nov. 16, 1933, to the late John and Elizabeth Walter in Lingle. He attended the University of Colorado, where he played basketball on the Buffalo’s team that played in the Final Four in 1955. After losing to Bill Russell and the University of San Francisco in the National Semi-Final, the Buffalo’s defeated the University of Iowa for the third place in the nation. Dr. Walter earned a B.A. degree in 1955 in organic chemistry and went on to earn a B.S. in pharmacy and a M.S. in medicinal chemistry in 1958 while serving as assistant basketball coach for the freshman and varsity teams. Dr. Walter also earned a Ph.D. in 1961 from the University of Connecticut in organic and medicinal chemistry. He was a professor of pharmacology at the University of North Dakota (Fargo) the Medical University of Tennessee (Memphis), and the University of Mississippi. Dr. Walter joined the faculty of the Medical University of South Carolina in 1968 and became professor and chairman of the Department of Biology and Pharmacology at MUSC in 1971, and continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1993, when he was named Professor Emeritus. He served on the Isle of Palms City Council for four years and was past chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and Zoning Committee.

Dr. Walter is survived by his wife of 23 years Margaret Satterfield (Peggy) Walter of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; a son Michael Walter and his wife Terri, a grandson John Thomas Walter, and a son Wayne Walter all of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; a brother Adam Walter and his wife Doris of Torrington; four step-children; and six step-grandchildren.
