Feb. 14, 1924-March 28, 2013
WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Flora Smith passed away March 28, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Walla Walla, Wash. due to complications following a hip surgery. She was 89 years old.
Flora was born Flora Mae Gallaher on Feb. 14, 1924 to Virgil and Mildred Gallaher in Torrington. Flora grew up in Torrington, marrying Mike Smith on Aug. 31, 1941. They made their home in Torrington but spent several years working in Washington state and McMinnville and Pendleton, Ore.
Mike and Flora were married 35 years before his passing in 1976. Flora had been a homemaker for her husband and four boys during their marriage.
With one son left to raise and a mortgage to pay, she took the bull by the horns and decided she needed to change her life. She started at LB Murphy’s as a sales clerk and retired when Murphy’s sold as the top associate.
Flora didn’t get the opportunity to graduate from high school, as she had to “work out” to help support her family. She took great pride in receiving her adult high school diploma from Kirkwood Community College in February of 1980 and her GED certificate on May 12, 1980 at the Eastern Wyoming College. She was second in her class.
After retirement, Flora and her cousin Ted Walker traveled about the United States, meeting new relatives and devoting much time to genealogy, of which they both had a great interest.
Flora sold her Torrington home in 1998, (of which she had paid mortgage in full) and moved to Pendleton Ore. to be closer to her sons, Les (Pendleton) and Virgil “John” of Anza, Calif.
She traversed many miles of horse shows, parades, basketball, Little League baseball, high school volleyball and several crab feeds in support of her grandchildren.
Flora is survived by her sons, Leslie (Lynn) of Pendleton, Virgil “John” (Jerrie) of Anza; grandchildren Jeff Smith and Shanna Hamilton (Bill) of Pendleton, and Michelle (Michael) Gervais of Anza; with great grandchildren McKenna, Matthew and Madison Gervais and Holly Smith and daughter Kayla.
She was predeceased by her parents and siblings, her husband, Mike, and her son, Raymond.
There will be a gathering of friends and family at 11 a.m. May 1, 2013 at the Torrington Valley View Cemetery as Flora’s ashes are at her request interned next to her beloved husband, Mike.
