July 4, 1935-Feb. 11, 2013

TORRINGTON – Keith Kaye Kuxhausen, age 77, of Torrington, died peacefully Feb. 11, 2013 at Anschutz Medical Pavilion in Aurora, Colo., with his family by his side.

Keith was born July 4, 1935 in Scottsbluff, Neb. to Henry and Gertrude (Bott) Kuxhausen. As the son of a salesman, he moved often in his youth, living in 12 states, including Wyoming. Keith graduated from Torrington High school in 1953 where he was the team’s quarterback and was also a member of the varsity basketball and baseball teams, despite his being only five-foot, four-inches tall.

A late bloomer, he grew to six-foot during college. Keith married Suzanne Vaughn in Torrington in August 1955 and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1957. Suzanne preceded Keith in death on April 7, 1971.

Keith married Shirley “Sam” Alexander on May 12, 1972, in Longmont, Colo., where they lived from 1972 to 1999. Keith traveled throughout his career as a wholesale shoe representative for Wohl Shoe and other companies, with up to 12 state regions. He also served for a time as president of Mountain States Shoe Travelers association.

Keith semi-retired in 1992, when he and Sam bought the “Little Sub Shop” in Longmont, operating it until 1998. Keith and Sam then moved back to Torrington in 1998.

Keith’s passions in life were his family and golf. Nothing gave him greater joy than to be with his many children and grandchildren. Although a great and avid golfer, in a 2005 newspaper article featuring his life, Keith said his secret desire was, “to shoot par golf.”

He loved to swim with his children, was a great dancer and loved to play gin rummy, with very few ever beating him, although he pretended to “let” his kids or grandkids win once in a while. Keith was extremely social and an expert at teasing, which seemingly gave him great joy, especially with his family.

One of his favorite games was “last look.” Keith would bet on about anything, but only small 25-cent to $1 bets for the sport and the chance to say he won. He was a man with a big heart, very loving and affectionate. He lived in the moment, doing things his way, with no excuse or regret.

Wherever he was, there was love, fun and laughter. He did what few could do, bringing a blended family together, treating all as equals and his own. He gave the greatest gifts of all, love and life, and will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his wife, Sam, of Torrington; son Tim (Michele) Kuxhausen of Charlotte, N.C. (Sanders and Noah); daughter Kay Croghan of Greeley, Colo. (Mari-Colleen); daughter Julie (Royal, Jr.) Rich of Johnstown, Colo. (Royal III, wife Stephanie and Michelle); daughter Terri (Ron) Iverson of Longmont.

Also surviving is son David (Martha) Alexander of Brighton, Colo. (J.W., wife Moni, Jonathan, Jodi and Jamie); daughter Gina (Dave) Hawk of Littleton (Jeff, wife Sara, Tyler, Jarad); daughter Darcy Lawrence of Torrington (Hilarie, Whitney, Mitch, Samantha “Sammie”); Dari Alexander (Joe) of Mesa, Colo.; and two great grandchildren. Keith was preceded in death by his parents.

Private family services will be held. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at 3 p.m. at the Torrington Country Club in Torrington. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.howemortuary.com. Cremation has been entrusted to Howe Mortuary in Longmont.
