TORRINGTON – Funeral services for Joe J. Alvarez, 69, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 at Riverside Church of Christ with Pastor Lonnie Crowe officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery.
Joe died at Community Hospital in Torrington on Jan. 29, 2013. Memorials may be made to the family for a purpose to be decided later. Visitation will be Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the casket will be open briefly at the service. Joe was born May 12, 1943 in Torrington, the son of Felix and Maria (Del Paso) Alvarez. His family moved to Juarez, Mexico, where he lived until the age of 16 when his parents died, and he moved back to Torrington.
He married Antonia Dominguez in 1970. He worked for Midwest Roofing and Burlington Railroad for a short time before starting work for Kurt Manufacturing in Lyman, Neb. He retired in 2002 due to ill health.
Joe enjoyed doing puzzles, woodworking, playing Santa for children that were in dialysis and helping neighbors and friends with any project they might have. He was a member of Rhema Fellowship, where he volunteered a lot.
Joe is survived by his wife, Antonia Alvarez of Torrington; a daughter, Rosie Lee Alvarez, also of Torrington; a sister, San Juana Magallanes of El Paso, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mary Melchor, Nasaria Martinez and Zeaida Rosales; and a brother, Candelario Alvarez.
