Survival at sea: Veteran recounts WWII shipwreck

Modified: Tuesday, Sep 6th, 2011

World War II veteran Sgt. John Sussex scans over a photograph taken in 1944 of his U.S. Cavalry platoon. Sussex served in the Pacific Theater and survived a shipwreck in the Indian Ocean at 18 years old.

U.S. Calvary private John Sussex was stranded on a wooden life raft in the middle of the Indian Ocean with his fellow soldiers.

They hadn’t eaten in seven days and were sipping just enough water to keep them alive.

“A plane flew over to drop supplies and food, but we didn’t dare swim out to get it,” Sussex remembered. “There were sharks circling in the water.”
