Agriculture and oil can mix.
University of Wyoming (UW) trustees awarded a conditional five-year oil and gas lease for mineral interests on James C. Hageman Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center (SAREC) property in a special meeting Thursday morning.
UW officials issued a request for proposals to develop the oil and gas deposits near SAREC in May. Samson Oil and Gas was the only respondent. The Australia-based company has targeted the Niobrara shale formation in Wyoming and Colorado, and already holds leases on 18,000 mineral acres surrounding SAREC. The university owns about 3,300 acres at SAREC and mineral rights to 3,275 of those acres.
