Renowned speaker advocates genocide prevention

Modified: Friday, Nov 12th, 2010

Dr. Ellen Kennedy speaks to an audience at Eastern Wyoming College Wednesday evening. Kennedy is the founder of World Without Genocide, an organization dedicated to anti-genocide efforts.

Dr. Ellen Kennedy had what she calls “Anne Frank dreams.”

The speaker and World Without Genocide founder said she found herself many times having nightmares echoing the experiences of a Holocaust victim: being dragged off into the night by a misguided military force, tortured and ultimately killed.

Her “crime” was simply being Jewish.

Kennedy has since made it her life’s mission to speak out against genocide, much as she did at Eastern Wyoming College Wednesday evening to a crowd of about 60 people.

Kennedy focused her talk on the first genocide of the 21st century in the Darfur region of Sudan, a country in northern Africa. Toward the beginning of this century, tensions began to escalate between two groups of people in Sudan: the majority of people, who are farmers and identify themselves as Africans and the minority nomadic grazers, who raise animals for a living and identify themselves as Arabs. Since the desert in Sudan is expanding, grazers have had to trek increased distances to supply themselves and their herds with food and water. This drew the grazers closer to the farmers, which in turn caused land disputes.

Those who identify themselves as Arabs run the Sudanese government, vied for the land the resources therein and therefore they sided with the grazers. The government gave the self-identified Arabs the right to kill the African farmers and take their land.
