Optimism outlines job market
Modified: Monday, Apr 26th, 2010

The job market in Goshen County is looking brighter.

For the second month in a row, the unemployment rate in the county held steady at 6.4 percent – well below the national average of 10.2 percent.

Wyoming Department of Workforce Services Torrington Center supervisor Gilbert Servantez said he’s seen far less job seekers in the past month than in previous months.

“In January, we had about 900 people come into our office who were out of work and looking for jobs. That has been a pretty average number over the last year,” he said. “This last month, we only had about 600 people coming in looking for work.”

Preliminary Wyoming Department of Employment numbers indicate 5,816 people were employed in Goshen County in March; 88 more than in February. The unemployment count increased from 392 to 398 people during that same time frame.

Goshen County has the fourth lowest unemployment rate among Wyoming Counties, falling only slightly behind numbers posted in Albany, Sublette, Hot Springs and Niobrara Counties. Lincoln County has the state’s highest unemployment rate at 10.8 percent.

Statewide unemployment numbers dropped for the second straight month in March, falling to 7.3 percent from the 7.5 percent recorded in February.
