Blazers finish weekend 1-1

TORRINGTON – A busy weekend of conference play for the Torrington High School Blazers opened with Torrington scoring a resounding 4-0 victory against the Douglas Bearcats at the Old Wiseman Field on Friday, April 26.

A powerful, coordinated Blazer offense kept the pressure on the Bearcats’ defense with repeated attacks into Douglas’ territory, culminating in two goals for Torrington in both the first and second halves. A gritty, airtight Blazer defense completely shut down the Bearcats’ offensive momentum.

The evening featured Senior Night, with the Blazers recognizing contributions by Adam Bartlett, Greysen Shields and Leo Belli.

“We played probably our most complete game of the season against Douglas,” coach Gabe Bartlett said. “We passed the ball extremely well and were able to break Douglas down with crisp passing. Our defense was great all night as (the Bearcats) only had a couple of chances at the goal. It was a great way for our seniors to honored.”

On Saturday, Torrington traveled to play Worland. The Warriors established a 1-0 lead at halftime and scored a second goal late in the second half.

Fighting back in the remaining 12 minutes of regulation, Torrington netted a pair of goals to tie the game, 2-2.

As the final few minutes of the game counted down, Worland managed to score twice for the Warriors to post the win, 4-2.

“We really couldn’t get out of our own way against Worland,” coach Bartlett said. “We struggled with possession, winning the ball and putting shots on target. I was really proud of the boys as they fell down 2-0 and battled back to tie the game. The bounces didn’t go our way down the stretch and Worland made some plays – a credit to the team they are.”

A gritty Torrington offense controlled the game for the majority of the first half. Junior Skyler Thomas and sophomore Beaux Shimic each made a shot on goal.

On defense, junior Carter Blevins cleared the Blazers’ goal area with a header and junior goalie Ayden Shimic made two saves.

Sophomore Anthony Arnusch lined up a penalty kick, sending the ball past the Bearcats’ goalie to post Torrington’s first goal.

Later in the first half, Thomas kicked in Torrington’s second goal.

Defensive plays by Riggs, Shields, Blevins and sophomore Jace Schlagel kept Torrington’s backfield and midfield clear while Ayden Shimic snagged two more saves.

The halftime scoreboard favored the Blazers, 2-0.

Hatch netted Torrington’s third goal midway into the second quarter. Thomas rounded out scoring with a goal before the end of regulation, assisted by Arnusch.

Belli, Hatch, Thomas, Arnusch and junior Nounou Braddy maintained the offensive pressure during the second half with shots on goal.

Defensively, Ayden Shimic tallied four saves in the second half while Riggs, Blevins, Shields, Schlagel and junior Nataniel Stull consistently cleared Torrington’s side of the field.

Worland

The Warriors scored early in regulation before the Torrington defense closed ranks for the remainder of the first half.

Ayden Shimic posted three saves, including one on a penalty kick. Shields, Bartlett, Stull, Blevins and Riggs kept the backfield and midfield clear.

Worland scored again late in the second half to widen its lead, 2-0.

Rebounding, the Torrington offense responded with a pair of goals to tie the game, 2-2, with eight minutes remaining. Thomas kicked in the first goal, assisted by Arnusch. A penalty kick by Arnusch resulted in Torrington’s second goal.
