State inspector clarifies electrical codes

Members of the state Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety addressed the city council at their regular meeting Tuesday night to answer questions regarding an ordinance requiring those doing electrical work within the city to obtain a license from the building inspector.

The previous wording of the ordinance allowed those who were not being paid to do their own electrical wiring.

“We do not intend to make Torrington’s regulation any stronger than the state’s,” Mayor Leroy Schafer said.

State Electrical Compliance Inspector Rick Michon said the state code on electrical work has a number of exceptions. According to the state code, the owner and major stakeholder of a building can do work on the property if they do not intend to sell the property within a year, and they are liable for any problems.
