In 1984, the Wyoming High School Coaches Hall of Fame inducted their charter members. In the audience that evening was a young coach who wondered if somehow, someday, he too might join this elite group. It would be a dream come true.
Last week, that dream did come true for Guernsey-Sunrise athletic director Glenn Freeburg as his name was added to this year’s class of inductees. Making the Hall of Fame is a significant achievement, as only 5 percent of coaches are inducted.
Freeburg began coaching in 1977 and will enter his 32nd year this fall. His head coaching experiences include Albin (1977-1982), Southeast (1982-2001) and Guernsey-Sunrise (2001-present). His highly successful career spans volleyball, basketball and track, with an overall record of 866 wins. His record includes 22 conference championships (10 in basketball, eight in track and four in volleyball); 53 regional championships (30 in track, 19 in basketball and four in volleyball); 16 state runner-up championships (13 in track, two in volleyball and one in basketball); and nine state championships (six in track, two in basketball and one in volleyball).
