Sewer project progressing on schedule
Modified: Monday, Apr 27th, 2009

The $486,000 sanitary sewer project between East A and B streets in Torrington is slightly behind schedule but should still be completed in June, according to the project engineer.

The project, which replaces a sewer line from the highway to the Goshen County Detention Center, is located in the alley between East A and B streets.

Torrington Mayor Leroy Schafer said the city scheduled the work for several reasons.

“One of the causes was to relieve a problem with the county jail inmates putting things into the sewer,” Schafer said. “A grinding facility will be put into the sewer line at the jail facility. Also, the elevation of the sewer pipes made it hard to clean the sewer without having it back up into different residences. This problem will be solved.”

Schafer said that according to the contractor, Trig Domson Inc. of Torrington, 20th Street should be open April 30. Mark Weis, Torrington project engineer, said the project has been delayed slightly due to the power outages that took place about a month ago when Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) was redirecting power.

Weis said the work is “slow and tedious” due to the confines of the alleys.

Concrete was poured behind the library and city hall on Thursday, Weis said, and needs seven days to cure.

“We are trying to get the streets done first,” Weis said. “The original completion date was June 10 which will be changed due to the power delays and changes encountered on the project.”

Different streets in the construction area were blocked for several days, causing concern for some Torrington residents who use them.

“I am sorry people have been inconvenienced by not going through the streets but it was a necessary project,” Schafer said.
