The city of Torrington will be attaching a survey question to the June 1 water bill that will ask residents whether or not they want a fluoride supplement added to the city’s water supply.
The survey question, which will be printed on the section of the bill that is returned to the city with the payment, will require a yes or no answer. According to Mayor Leroy Schafer, the city will tally the results, including those surveys that are returned blank, and the results will factor into the decision on whether or not to add the fluoride.
“We certainly want to know what people think,” Schafer said.
The city is now in the process of creating the budget for the 2008-2009 fiscal year and the fluoride addition could be added to it if approved on several criteria including cost, potential benefits, potential risks and whether or not the public wants the additive.
Schafer said that about 3,400 of the surveys would be mailed out and the city would likely have them returned by June 15. The final reading of the budget will take place June 17.
